Gas Jet Disruption Mitigation Studies on Alcator C - Mod and DIII - D

چکیده
High-pressure noble gas jet injection is a mitigation technique which potentially satisfies the requirements of fast response time and reliability, without degrading subsequent discharges. Previously reported gas jet experiments on DIII-D showed good success at reducing deleterious disruption effects. In this paper, results of recent gas jet disruption mitigation experiments on Alcator C-Mod and DIII-D are reported. Jointly, these experiments have greatly improved the understanding of gas jet dynamics and the processes involved in mitigating disruption effects.

1 Edge dimensionless identity experiment on DIII - D and Alcator
Experiments were carried out to study the similarity of H-mode (High confinement mode) physics on the Alcator C-Mod [1] and DIII-D [2] tokamaks comparing plasmas with matched local edge dimensionless parameters (β, ρ∗, ν∗, q95) and shape (ε, κ, δ). It was observed that matching local values of the dimensionless parameters on top of the H-mode pedestals produces similar Te and ne profiles across...
متن کاملMHD Simulations for Studies of Disruption Mitigation by High Pressure Noble Gas Injection
The problem of disruptions is a major challenge for ITER which establishes engineering and operational limits. MHD simulations including radiation and atomic physics have the capability of extending results of mitigation experiments on present devices to accurate predictions for ITER. The role of MHD in cases where impurity penetration is shallow is seen in a series of Alcator C-Mod simulations...
متن کاملDisruption mitigation with high-pressure noble gas injection
High-pressure gas jets of neon and argon are used to mitigate the three principal damaging effects of tokamak disruptions: thermal loading of the divertor surfaces, vessel stress from poloidal halo currents and the buildup and loss of relativistic electrons to the wall. The gas jet penetrates as a neutral species through to the central plasma at its sonic velocity. The injected gas atoms increa...
متن کاملDIII-D edge plasma simulations with UEDGE code including non-diffusive anomalous cross-field transport
Recently, both Alcator C-Mod and DIII-D tokamaks observed fast anomalous cross-field plasma transport in the SOL. These observations supported by theoretical studies have indicated that such transport is essentially non-diffusive and intermittent. We present the results of macroscopic plasma simulations with the UEDGE transport code including anomalous cross-field outward-directed convection fo...
متن کاملPSFC / JA - 05 - 46 Advances in measurement and modeling of the high - confinement - mode pedestal on the Alcator C - Mod tokamak
Edge transport barrier (ETB) studies on the Alcator C-Mod tokamak [Phys. Plasmas 1, 1511, (1994)] investigate pedestal scalings and radial transport of plasma and neutrals. Pedestal profiles show trends with plasma operational parameters such as total current IP . A ballooning-like I2 P dependence is seen in the pressure gradient, despite calculated stability to ideal ballooning modes. A simila...
